Probiotics in a pot: The low down on yogurt

Yogurt is a valuable source of protein, vitamins and minerals.  Yogurt is also more readily digested than unfermented milk products and can be useful for people with lactose intolerance.  During the production of milk to make yogurt and cheese the fermentation process produces enzymes that breakdown lactose.  So yogurt and cheese do not contain the milk sugar lactose.

Quick Tip: Garlic cuts cancer risk

Garlic can cut the risk of bowel cancer by up to 30 per cent. Scientists analysed studies on the herb carried out for the last 10 years. Some studies suggest half a clove of raw garlic a day is needed. Others show two a day can also help prevent a lung condition – pulmonary arterial hypertension.

The key ingredient in garlic seems to be allicin. It is thought to dampen inflammation in the body and act as an antioxidant. You can also take garlic in supplement form.  (An excellent one is Aged Garlic – see Resources page).

Feel good aromatherapy

The essential oils used in aromatherapy stimulate the part of brain that deals with emotion and memory, promoting the release of feel good chemicals. They can lift your mood but their healing properties can also soothe and relieve a host of physical and emotional problems from depression to headaches.
